Orchard Rd’s Last Building Block

With new shopping malls being shoehorned into every available space on Orchard Rd, why, many visitors ask, does the Thai embassy occupy such large, prominent grounds in an area of staggeringly expensive real estate? Back in the 1990s the Thai government was reportedly offered S$139 million for the site, but they turned it down because selling the land, bought by Thailand for S$9000 in 1983 by the revered King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), would be seen as an affront to his memory. And so, it remains, coveted by frustrated developers.
